The digital picture assignment is one that is interesting and I think that I will be using in my Digital Imaging class. It is a good way for students to take pictures and create a virtual portfolio that they can show others. I do not have a camera, but my Blackberry has the ability to shoot pictures and email them to Posterous. This ability makes the process very simple and convenient to work.
As for the readings, I really like the Presentation Zen text book. I am not a huge reader and thought that the work would be dull, at best. The author has some really good points and it has opened my eyes to the fact that I am just following the masses. I am working on summer training for an engineering course and I have started using the "Zen" method to create presentations for the class. The instructors are indifferent when I first show them the PowerPoint because they don't think I have enough material. After explaining my method about using my knowledge of the subject to explain the concept, they were less concerned about my presentations' success.

I was wondering what sort of feedback someone would get when using Zen in their presentations. It seems like Zen requires a narrative, a presenter to make the presentation content rich. I'm wondering how we are going to create successful stand-alone presentations and publish them without losing the content in them. I'm sure the right tool for the job exists, but I'm not sure what it is. Would something like SlideBoom work?
ReplyDeleteTraditional Power Point Presentations- read boring- will have a long hard death. And you have already run up against that!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see you are already turning to zen in your presentations. I've been trying to do the same thing, but I do need to keep reminding myself of the handout that can go along with it. This is where the meat of the content can be found for review, comments, notes etc.. I really think that the handout will be critical for my students to really maximize the benefit of the presentation.
ReplyDeleteLucky you to be teaching a digital imaging class. I would kill to teach a technology class. On the other hand I too like the Presentation Zen book. It is clearly a better read than the past books.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear more about your digital imaging class! What, specifically, do you cover in the class? I also think that your point about individuals not liking more streamlined presentations is interesting. We are taught to fill presentations with words, even though that is not very effective. And, then, when you try to show them better presentations, they are reluctant!
